WHAT IS A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE ?

  • A programming language is a vocabulary and set of grammatical rules for instructing a computer to perform specific tasks.
  • In simple words a programming language is a computer language that programmers use to develop software programmers other sets of instructions for computers to execute.
  • World’s first computer program was developed during 1842-1849 by ADA LOVELACE.

  • In 1920’s the first recognizably modern electrically powered computers were created. Hence the limited speed and memory in these computers forced computers to write  hand tuned ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE programs.

  • Then between 1963 – 1975 an high level programming language was developed by KONRAD ZUSE for his Z1 computer. But this high level programming was not implemented at thattime.

  • The first functioning programming language designed to communicate instructions to a computer was early written in 1950 by JOHN MAUCHLY’S.

  • In the early 1950’s   ALICK GLENNIE developed AUTO CODE, possibly the first compiled programming language.

  • In 1954 FORTRAN was invented atIBM team by JOHN BACKUS, It was the first highly used high level programming language.

  • During the period of 1959 GRACE HOPPER invented another programming language called FLOW-MATIC.

  • Other programming languages which are still in use today like LISP was invented by JOHN C CARTHY in 1958.

  • COBOL language was invented by SHORT RANGE COMMITIEE in 1959.

  • Another milestone in programming language histiry was set when a new language of algorithms ALGOL was invented in 1950’s.

  • Then here comes the journey of programming languages begins…………
